Independent Musicians. It’s tough to find a class of artists in today’s society that are so deeply revered, yet so drastically underrepresented- Actors have the Screen Actors Guild, Visual Artists and Designers have the Freelancers Union, Writers and Journalists have Media Bistro. But what about Musicians? Besides the record deal (which is diminishing in both financial substance and overall influence), there isn’t much of an official support network.
Wanduta arose out of a deep respect and passion for the incredible element of community among independent musicians, their solidarity despite this lack of an official and recognized support body. Local musicians supporting each other, percolating musical movements and scenes, even independent labels and associations, many of whom we are proud to call our partners, intrigue and inspire us greatly.
Are we the first to stand in awe of this community? Absolutely not. Are we the first to attempt to bind and mobilize independent musicians on a large scale? Of course not. But where others have failed, we will succeed. By providing musicians, and musicians only, the tools they need to continue making music, expanding their window for breakthrough and success, we aim to foster a thriving community of independent artists unlike anywhere else.
Only when we reach a critical mass of members will we begin focusing on a platform to present the work of our members to the greater public. We don’t want to do this prematurely. We believe that this has been the failing of other services with our same aspirations. We believe that if we serve the musicians meaningfully and wholeheartedly, the rest will fall into place When we release Wanduta upon the world, our members will be right there with us, and we will become the destination for independent music.
